About us

Cumberland Ellis can trace its roots back to the 18th century. We are the descendant of various firms, and have evolved as a result of mergers over that time. Some families, businesses and charities have instructed us for decades; equally, many members of the firm started their careers with us, and have been with us for a long time.

The core of the firm was established by the merger in 1989 of Darley Cumberland with Ellis & Young Jackson to form Cumberland Ellis . We were joined in September 2003 by the relatively youthful Ellis Wood, which was founded in 1883. In March 2005 we moved from our previous office in the Aldwych to our present location next to Grayıs Inn, and our name became Cumberland Ellis. In common with an increasing number of professional practices, the partners decided to form a limited liability partnership to take effect from 1st May 2005.

Our legal work has always covered many areas, and we act for a wide range of clients, from private individuals to companies. In the meantime, technology has changed dramatically, but our values and service remain the same.
